About James May

Like other Veterans, James May understands the meaning of selfless service. James May was born in DeWitt Army Hospital at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His father, who retired from active duty as a Colonel, served as the Senior Army Chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery on September 11, 2001. Growing up as “military brats,” James and his two brothers were drawn to serve our country. All three brothers are Iraq War Veterans. From 1999 to 2006, James had the honor of serving as an officer and chaplain in the United States Army. During his last three years on active duty, Chaplain (CPT) May had the very unique privilege of serving in Iraq with the soldiers on the front lines: at Walter Reed Hospital, with soldiers who have been injured in war; and at Arlington National Cemetery, for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation and freedom.

Following his service in the military, James moved back to northeastern Pennsylvania with his wife, Jill and their three children. Their oldest son James just completed 6 years of service in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Their son Isaiah and his wife Brianna live in Clarks Summit and their daughter Hannah recently returned home from Honduras where she had been teaching at a school for orphaned and at-risk children. James’ wife Jill is an elementary school teacher at Summit Christian Academy in Clarks Summit. They have one 2 year-old grandson named Theo.

James and Jill have instilled the value of service to one’s country and community to each of their children and are very involved in their community. Six years ago, they started a highly successful Bible study program for high school students. From this Bible study program, they developed an organization called NEPA Student Ministries, which teaches high school juniors and seniors about leadership. The organization has sponsored mission trips to South and Central America where the students work with orphaned and at-risk children – many of whom are targets of human traffickers.

From 2011 until 2020, James served as the regional Community Relations Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Most recently, James served as the Northeastern Regional Public Affairs Manager for the Pennsylvania Treasury Department.

James May decided to run for State Representative because he wants to take his middle class values, military service and service to his community to fix some of Pennsylvania’s biggest problems, including: property taxes; out-of-control spending; crumbling infrastructure; crime and public safety and protecting our personal and constitutional rights.

The Issues

  • PROTECTING TAXPAYERS

Harrisburg’s reach into our lives through high taxes, out-of-control spending, over regulation and more debt is hurting our families and small businesses.  As our State Representative, James May will oppose unnecessary tax increases, like the “rain tax,” control spending, and eliminate waste.

  • RESTORING ELECTION INTEGRITY

Pennsylvanians have a right to free and fair elections.  James May will push for greater transparency, ballot security and Voter ID.

  • DEFENDING THE 2nd AMENDMENT

James May will protect our 2nd Amendment rights from the liberal activists in Washington D.C. and Harrisburg who want to restrict our 2nd Amendment rights and our ability to protect our families and ourselves.

  • PROTECTING THE UNBORN

James May is proudly pro-life.  He supports the sanctity of life and is against taxpayer funded abortions.

  • PROTECTING INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS

During the last two years, Governor Wolf and his liberal allies have used the pandemic to shut down businesses, force seniors into nursing homes, push more government mandates and take away individual rights.  James May believes that we must end government’s intrusion into our lives.  He supports allowing businesses, individuals and families to make their own decisions without government mandates or interference.

  • FIGHTING CRIME

Public safety is the number one responsibility of government.  James May will support victims of crime and law enforcement.  He will oppose any effort by the radical left to defund the police.

  • PROMOTING JOB CREATION

Our ability to pursue the American Dream in Pennsylvania is vanishing.  High taxes, unfunded mandates and job crushing regulations have stymied the creation of family sustaining jobs.  James May will support pro-growth policies that help to create a job friendly environment that will help businesses create jobs.

  • INCREASING ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE

During the last decade, healthcare costs have soared while access to quality healthcare seems to have declined.  James May will seek to make healthcare more affordable at the state level by seeking to make healthcare more transparent and increasing access to healthcare through telemedicine.

  • IMPROVING ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION

Every parent wants the best education for their children.  The key to a bright future is a quality education.  James May supports investing in public education as well as giving parents increased choices in the education that best fits their children.  James believes that we need to both support public schools that are meeting the needs of our children but also support choice so that Pennsylvania students are not trapped in failing and unsafe schools.

  • BANNING CRITICAL RACE THEORY

The pandemic has shown us the importance for parents and taxpayers to pay better attention to what is being taught in our schools. James May supports increasing the level of curricula transparency, giving parents a voice in their children’s education and ending the special interests’ control over what is taught in our schools. He supports banning critical race theory and other social activism in school.

  • STANDING UP FOR VETERANS

James May has not only served his country, but as our State Representative he will be extremely active to make sure that every Pennsylvania veteran receives the benefits that they have earned.  He will support programs to help our veterans including job retraining and mental health programs.

As a combat veteran, I've witnessed firsthand the sacrifice made to protect our freedom. As your state representative, I will continue to fight to defend our traditional American values and to make Harrisburg more accountable to taxpayers.
